Hands-on ApproachOur approach to education is to create highly motivated self-learners––students with the ability to identify their own purposes for studying and to recognize barriers to understanding and overcome them. We do this by empowering students with the skills of observation and by further developing their natural curiosity through a variety of exercises and projects. This is a strategy for learning based on Study Technology, the educational philosophy of L. Ron Hubbard, American philosopher and educator. Students delve into a wide variety of academic subjects presented in a way that both parallels and accesses the real world. No subject is isolated, and all subjects require the student to engage in explorative, hands-on activities, both inside and outside of the classroom. In Lower School, this hands-on approach can be found in the many field trips students take, in the "projects" they tackle and in the emphasis throughout the day on practical activities. A good portion of the Lower School student’s day is spent outside the classroom, interacting with the environment he or she is studying. Field TripsField trips are scheduled regularly (at least once a month) and are a key element of the Lower School experience. Students might visit a working farm, see a puppet show, explore a museum, tour a fire station or attend a musical concert. Focus is always on exploring the world around them. |
